Free, downloadable digital books and music are available online, all you need is a library card! We are pleased to announce our new online digital book collection from the North Carolina Digital Library (NCDL). NCDL is a group of North Carolina public libraries that have joined together to bring this resource to their library cardholders. The new service makes it possible for you to check out and download digital books anytime of day from anywhere in the world.

There are two kinds of digital books available, audio books and ebooks. Digital Audio Books, spoken-word digital audio files, can be enjoyed on your PC, your personal mp3 player, or on a CD. An eBook is a text-based, digital version of a book that can be read on your home computer, or a handheld device.

It’s easy, all you need to do is install the free software from the website, then browse the collection of fiction, mysteries, romance, nonfiction, best sellers, and more. Your choice can then be first downloaded to your home computer, and then transfered to your portable device. You can also choose to burn the audio books directly to a CD. When the lending period is up, your digital books are automatically returned — so there are never any late fees! A valid library card is all you need to begin reading or hearing digital books today.

Can’t find the digital book you want from the North Carolina Digital Library? Net Library through the NC LIVE collection is another resource for digital books available to all North Carolina library users. To access this collection from home you will need to call HCPL and request the NC LIVE password.
