Smoky Mountain Center Board of Directors


  • 4th Friday of every month

Meetings are traditionally combined in July and August and November and December.


This board: 

  • Engages in collaborative, comprehensive planning, budgeting, implementing and monitoring of community-based mental health, developmental disabilities, and substance abuse services
  • Provides for services to clients in the SMC service area
  • Determines the needs of the area authority’s clients and coordinates with the Secretary of the Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services for the provision of services to clients through area and state facilities
  • develop plans and budgets for the area authority subject to the approval of the Secretary
  • Assure that the services provided by the SMC area authority meet the rules of the Commission and Secretary of the North Carolina Division of MH/DD/SAS
  • Comply with federal requirements as a condition of receipt of federal grants
  • Appoint by resolution an area director
  • Contract to provide services to governmental or private entities, including employee assistance programs
