A Public Health Nurse is assigned to each public school in Haywood County. School nurses play a vital role in the health and safety of public school children, and provide a wide range of services, including:
Direct health care to students and staff
Case management for special health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, ADHD, epilepsy, and severe allergies
Advocacy, health promotion, screenings and referrals
Function as a liaison between school personnel, family, community, and health care providers
Educate students and staff, and build student’s capacity for self-management of disease when appropriate
Attending student care team meetings
Immunization compliance assurance
Management of comprehensive health programs at assigned school(s)
Skilled nursing supervision, including Emergency Action Plans and Individualized Health Plans for specific students
