The final sample results showed no detectable contamination, allowing the lifting of the recreational water advisory for Jones Cove Creek in Haywood County.
Firefighters and emergency management staff battled rain, briars, water, and mud—some for more than 24 hours straight—as they contained a diesel fuel spill that made its way into the creek over Memorial Day Weekend.
The spill began when an equipment failure at Haywood Regional Medical Center allowed fuel to enter the storm drain system. Firefighters estimate more than 2,000 gallons of dyed diesel fuel made its way into the water.
We would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work and dedication in resolving this matter.
