Today, Haywood County commemorates the third anniversary of Tropical Storm Fred, a devastating weather event that hit our community on August 17, 2021. As we reflect on the challenges faced and the resilience demonstrated, we honor those lost and recognize the ongoing recovery efforts.
The storm's impact in Haywood County was severe:
-Over 1,600 emergency personnel were deployed
-99 agencies collaborated in the response
-More than 700 homes were impacted
-Our emergency shelter housed over 100 residents at its peak
-79 individuals were rescued from dangerous flood conditions
-Tragically, six lives were lost to the storm's fury
"Three years later, we remember those we lost and the hardships our community endured," said Bryant Morehead, Haywood County Manager. "The strength and unity displayed by our residents and first responders during this crisis continue to inspire us as we work toward a more resilient future."
Since the storm, Haywood County has been actively working on several initiatives to improve disaster preparedness, response, and recovery:

-Ongoing mitigation efforts to reduce future flood risks
-Housing projects to assist those displaced by the storm
-Work has been done to improve potential emergency shelter capabilities
-Improve community resilience through with efforts to educate through ReadyHaywood
These ongoing projects demonstrate our commitment to protecting our community from future natural disasters.
