Boards & Commissions I - Z
The Haywood County Board of Commissioners makes appointments to a number of boards, committees, commissions and authorities, a list of which is maintained by the Clerk to the Board of County Commissioners.
Some of these organizations have membership appointments that are dictated by statute or professional role, but the majority, listed here, are open to members of the general public. All citizens of Haywood County are encouraged to volunteer to serve on the boards/committees listed below and HERE when vacancies arise. Vacancies on these boards and committees are posted under “Latest News” on the front page of the Haywood County website and sent to the publication sunshine list as positions become open.

Library Board of Trustees
The Library Board of Trustees provides leadership, advocacy, and direction for Haywood County Public libraries. The responsibilities of this board include adopting written policies governing the operation and program of the Haywood County Public Library.

Maggie Valley Planning Board
The Planning Board is an Advisory Board that aids the Board of Aldermen in making decisions that involve adopted planning documents, land development codes, and the zoning map. The Planning Board is also the single authority in granting subdivision approval.

Maggie Valley Zoning Board
The Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBOA) serves as the quasi-judicial body within the Town of Maggie Valley. The ZBOA hears cases for special use permits and variances, and is the deciding body in such cases. The ZBOA also hears appeals from zoning interpretations made by the Town Planner.

Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee
This advisory committee serves to ensure the quality of care for the elderly and disabled adults placed in long-term care facilities by monitoring the facilities and by taking and resolving complaints.

Recreation Advisory Board
The purpose of this board is to provide a forum for citizens’ suggestions or concerns, to advise the staff on community recreation needs, and to make staff of the Recreation and Parks Department aware of and sensitive to public needs.

Region A Aging Advisory Council
This council carries out advisory functions related to developing and coordinating community-based systems of services for all older persons in the planning and service area.

Sediment Control Commission
The purpose of the Sediment Control Commission is to carry out the appeals and general directives included in the county’s Sediment Control Ordinance.

Smoky Mountain Event Center Board
The Smoky Mountain Event Center Board seeks to promote and encourage agricultural, manufacturing, educational, recreational, cultural, and art activities and events for the enrichment of Haywood County. This board also plans and coordinates the annual Haywood County Fair.

Southwestern North Carolina Resource Conservation
The council serves as the governing body for the Resource Conservation and Development Program in developing and carrying out plans for social, economic, and environmental betterment of communities. The council plans and promotes the orderly conservation and development of certain resources including human, land, water, wildlife, forestry, recreation and cultural resources.

Tourism Development Authority Board
The Haywood County TDA Board provides oversight of the Tourism Development Authority’s financial matters, policies and procedures; marketing activities, materials, policies and procedures; Group Sales activities, policies, and procedures; personnel matters, policies and procedures; bylaws and political issues.

Watershed Review Board
The purpose of this Review Board is established in the county’s Watershed Protection Ordinance.

Waynesville Board of Adjustment
Waynesville Board of Adjustment functions to interpret zoning maps and pass upon disputed questions of lot lines or district boundary lines and any other questions of interpretation that may arise in the administration of this chapter.

Waynesville Planning Board
The function and duty of this board is to make comprehensive surveys and studies of existing conditions and probable future developments and prepare such plans for physical, social and economic growth as will best promote the public health, safety, morals, convenience or the general welfare as well as efficiency and economy in the development of the town.

Zip Code Subcommittees of the TDA
The Zip Code Subcommittees receive, review, and recommend funding allocations for all eligible applications received to determine use of 1% Occupancy Tax funds to promote travel, tourism, and cover tourist-related expenditures in each of the collection areas.

Boards & Commissions A - H
